PG Buzz Feature: ‘Sophie’s Boost for Shopkeepers’

I was really pleased to be featured by PG Buzz in an article titled ‘Sophie’s Boost for Shopkeepers’, recognising some of the work I’ve been doing to support independent retailers through campaigns, ideas and practical resources.

The phrase “boost for shopkeepers” actually captured something quite important to me, because so much of what I try to create is ultimately about helping independent retailers feel more confident, visible and supported in what can often be a very overwhelming environment.

Shopkeeping can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also feel isolating at times. Independent retailers are expected to be marketers, merchandisers, buyers, customer service teams, social media managers and business strategists all at once, often while physically running a shop floor day after day.

What I’ve become increasingly passionate about is finding ways to make some of that feel lighter and more manageable.

Not through unrealistic promises or overly corporate “growth” language, but through practical, adaptable ideas rooted in real retail experience. Things that genuinely help shops communicate more clearly with customers, create stronger atmosphere and connection, and feel proud of what they do.

A huge part of that is visibility.

Independent shops often underestimate how much customers genuinely want to support them, but customers need reminding, inviting and emotionally engaging. That’s why I care so much about campaigns, storytelling, visual merchandising and customer-facing messaging. Small changes in how a shop presents itself can completely shift how customers respond emotionally to it.

Community is another enormous part of it all.

One of the loveliest things about the greeting card and independent retail industries is how generous and open-hearted so many people within them are. When retailers share ideas, encouragement and support with one another, the effect can ripple outward far beyond one individual shop.

I’m very grateful to PG Buzz for recognising and featuring the work I’ve been doing in this area, and for continuing to champion conversations around the future of independent retail and greeting cards more broadly.

Because ultimately, I believe independent shops still have something incredibly valuable to offer the world: warmth, personality, creativity and genuine human connection.
