The Shopkeeper Journal is the official publication of Smart Shopkeeper Club, founded by me, Sophie Edwards. Drawing on three decades of running More Than Just a Gift, our multi award winning independent card and gift shop, it shares practical retail advice, real world insights and marketing inspiration for independent shopkeepers.

About The Shopkeeper Journal

The Shopkeeper Journal is a space for independent retailers navigating the real life of running a small shop.

The long days.
The constant interruptions.
The responsibility.
The creativity.
The pressure.
The passion.
The problem solving.
The sheer amount of things you somehow have to hold together at once.

Because independent shopkeeping isn’t just “retail”.

It’s serving customers, ordering stock, unpacking deliveries, building displays, managing staff, paying invoices, solving problems, posting on social media, supporting your local community, endless admin, staying positive under pressure and still somehow trying to think creatively about the future of your business at the same time.

And in recent years, all of that has become harder.

The Shopkeeper Journal exists to support independent retailers honestly, practically and creatively. Not from a corporate perspective or as a consultant, but from inside real shop life.

How It Started

I’ve been an independent shopkeeper for over 30 years, running  More Than Just a Gift in Leicestershire. Shopkeeping has been my life and it always will be.

In 2023, I started Petimo, my own greeting card design and publishing business alongside the shop, creating cards rooted in what customers are actually asking for, so shopkeepers don’t have to keep turning customers away.

As that new business started to grow, I found myself talking with more and more fellow shopkeepers and discovering that no matter where our shops are, how big they are or what we sell, we’re all trying to do the same thing: serve our customers as well as we possibly can while navigating the realities of modern independent retail.

And very often, we’re doing that while feeling quite alone.

But we’re not alone.

There are thousands of us.

All working through:

  • rising costs
  • overwhelm
  • constant pressure
  • changing customer habits
  • exhaustion
  • uncertainty
  • responsibility
  • and the relentless feeling that there’s always more to do.

Smart Shopkeeper Club

Then in 2025, after running the most successful spring campaign we’d ever done in our own shop, I wanted other independent retailers to be able to benefit from it too.

So I started Smart Shopkeeper Club, sharing free campaigns and practical resources designed to help independent retailers create connection, atmosphere and momentum in their own shops.

What began with Small Shop Summer gradually expanded into Thinking of You Week resources, Christmas campaigns and more conversations about what independent shopkeepers are really navigating behind the scenes.

Why The Shopkeeper Journal Exists

And from that, The Shopkeeper Journal grew.

Not only as a place to share resources, but also as somewhere for thoughtful conversations, practical encouragement, observations and honest reflections about independent shopkeeping itself.

Because behind every small shop is a person trying to hold an extraordinary number of things together at once.

The Shopkeeper Journal is a place to share:

  • observations
  • encouragement
  • campaigns
  • practical resources
  • achievable ideas
  • and a sense of solidarity among people who genuinely understand this life.

Because if you run your own shop, you already know.

You know the commitment.
The responsibility.
The emotional investment.
The buck-stops-with-you feeling.
The balancing act between creativity and practicality.
The constant mental load of trying to improve, adapt and keep moving forward.

And you also know that despite all of it, there’s something deeply meaningful about independent shopkeeping that’s hard to explain to people outside it.

If you live this life, you know how hard it is.
And if you love this life, you also know why it’s worth fighting for.

No Magic Formula

This isn’t a place that claims there’s one perfect formula for success.

And it’s not about adding even more pressure, noise or impossible expectations onto already overwhelmed shopkeepers.

Because successful shopkeeping isn’t a big thing, it’s a million little things:

  • noticing patterns
  • listening to customers
  • adjusting displays
  • improving systems
  • changing your mind
  • trying things
  • learning as you go
  • and choosing carefully where your time and energy actually matter most.

Sometimes what matters most is what you choose not to do.
