Enjoying a meal in Harrogate after a long day buying back in 2025.

Every July, thousands of independent retailers head to Harrogate Home & Gift with comfortable shoes, a notebook, and usually a shopping list.

Of course, buying products is an important part of the trip. The right product, bought at the right time, can become a bestseller for years to come. But after attending more than thirty years of Home & Gift, I've come to realise that the products themselves are only one part of the value. For us, Harrogate has become something else entirely.

It's our summer business away day.

Running an independent shop rarely leaves much uninterrupted thinking time. Between serving customers, unpacking deliveries, answering emails, solving problems and keeping everything moving, it's easy to spend every day working in the business rather than on it. Harrogate gives us permission to step away from all of that.

For a couple of days, our attention shifts completely towards the coming season. We aren't being interrupted every five minutes. Instead, we're surrounded by products, ideas, suppliers and fellow retailers, all thinking about Christmas at exactly the same time. That change of environment is incredibly valuable. Yes, we come home with orders. But we also come home with clarity.

Looking beyond the products

One of the biggest mistakes I think retailers can make is seeing Harrogate simply as a buying trip. The products matter, of course they really matter, but they're only one piece of a much bigger picture. I find myself noticing all sorts of things.

Which colours seem to be appearing across different suppliers? What materials keep catching my eye? Which stories are brands telling? How are products being displayed? Which stands are consistently busy, and why?

Sometimes an idea from one stand sparks a completely different idea for another category back in our own shop. A conversation with one supplier makes us rethink a display. A passing comment from another retailer sends us home with a fresh perspective on pricing or merchandising. Ideas rarely arrive in isolation. One thought leads naturally to another, and before long you're seeing your own shop differently. That's something that's difficult to recreate from behind a computer screen.

The value of stepping back

There's another reason I value Harrogate so highly. It creates space. In normal life we're often making dozens of small operational decisions every hour. At Harrogate, those everyday decisions fade into the background, allowing us to think more strategically. What worked well this year? What didn't? Which categories deserve more space? Where have customer tastes shifted? What opportunities have we overlooked?

Inspiration with purpose

One of the things I enjoy most about Harrogate is the atmosphere. There’s a genuine buzz. Retailers catching up with old friends. Suppliers proudly showing new collections. People sharing ideas over a drink in the sunshine. That positive energy is infectious. And you’re guaranteed to discover ideas that strengthen what makes your own business distinctive.

Start with your customers

Before we arrive at Harrogate, we've already spent months listening to our customers. Not just to what they've said, but to what they've actually bought. The products that have flown out. The displays that stopped people in their tracks. The categories that quietly outperformed expectations.

That knowledge gives us confidence. We're not wandering around hoping to be told what to buy. We're looking for opportunities that fit what we've already learned about our customers. The trade show doesn't replace that knowledge. It builds on it.

More than just a shopping trip

At the end of every Harrogate visit, I unpack samples, catalogues and order confirmations. But those aren't the only things I've brought home. I've brought back fresh enthusiasm. New ideas. Renewed confidence. A clearer picture of the season ahead. And perhaps most importantly, I've given myself the space to stop, think and look at my business from a different perspective. That's why, after all these years, I still believe Harrogate Home & Gift is one of the most valuable dates in the retail calendar. Not simply because it's where we buy stock. Because it's where we shape the season ahead.
